Brief history of the Wakizashi

The wakizashi was a short sword used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. Blade length varied, but most wakizashi were between 30 and 60 cm long. The wakizashi was typically worn together with the katana, and the two swords were known collectively as daishō. The wakizashi was used for close-quarters combat, and it was also considered a valuable token of a samurai’s status. Because the katana was so important, the wakizashi was sometimes referred to as the “companion sword.” In modern times, the wakizashi is no longer used in combat, but it is still prized as a practical and elegant weapon.
